Supplemental Heating Home Fire Safety The use of supplemental room heaters, such as wood and coal burning stoves, kerosene heaters, gas space heaters and electrical heaters, has decreased, along with the number of residential fires. Avoid using unvented kerosene, wood or coal burning stoves, or gas space heaters. An electronic ignition on a gas stove will help eliminate fumes from being released. Also, some companies claim that having your air ducts cleaned can improve your homes air quality. Dont use an unvented gas or kerosene heater in closed spaces, especially sleeping areas. Unvented space heaters, leaking chimneys and furnaces, gas water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, generators, and other gasoline powered equipment can all be causes of carbon monoxide and as a homeowner, you have to take precautions to protect yourself and your family.

Because of the pollution potential, you should never use unvented space heaters or gas logs, gas stoves, or other combustion equipment in an enclosed room. No unvented gas or kerosene space heaters or gas logs are used in my home. Poor ventilation during the use of a kerosene space heater, always follow instructions and safety precautions.
